Controversy

In spring of 2009, Shelby Public Schools banned the use of Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon in its AP English classes. This ban was decreed by the school superintendent and the with limited input from the community. It was championed by a couple of local churches and their members on the school board.[1] During the school board meeting on May 18, 2009, the ban was overturned on a 4–3 vote.[2]
